Having kept track of several projects or as some put it, campaigns, one metric I keep an eye on is a keyword phrase competition array between my project sites and those with a strong hand on the top slots. See Understanding Your Competition on this site.
The components or on-page items such as Title, URL, Description, Header tag keyword usage, which in my opinion have little to do with the way you rank in Google, are typically all over the place. This is to say, some of the top rankers have them, some have a partial set and others have none.
Page rank is another indicator which seems to serve as an indicator and not a qualifier for the most part, because not all the top rankers have high page ranks, although a number between 3 and 6 seem to be common with them. I should also add, there are some lower page rankings in the top ten positions as well, but not many.
It starts to get meaty when the top slots appear to have many pages indexed on the search engine.
