| Cloud Computing: is it right for you? | There has been an onslaught of information about the benefits of "Cloud Computing" and how wonderful it is for businesses. Store all your data in the Cloud, let someone else back up your data, so on and so forth.
The basis in cloud computing is the initial step in renting software. Just like Netflix, rents movies for a monthly subscription price, watch all you want for the month (as long as your subscription is active, you save the trips to the video rental store, DVD rental machine, streams over the Internet to your pc or Xbox, eliminate your cable TV, or Satalite TV bill, cloud computing is your total panacea which solves all your software, storage problems. Get to your data anywhere you have a data connection. Just pay the monthly subscription fee. Fail to do so, say bye bye to your Gigs of data.
There is always a downside to the ultimate solutions. For one, if you have sensitive data, you have no idea who is peeking at it. What if your business has customer contact information, and somehow, your competitor gets a hold of your stuff (by accident of course) and decides to take advantage of it? Maybe you're an Attorney, with classified info about cases you're working on, and it gets compromised?
We've seen cloud computing give up email addresses, credit card info and so much more that never reaches us via the mainstream media. What makes you think your data may be more secure.

What about the backups of your data? Is all your data being properly backed up, can it be recovered in the event of failure?
When you do this yourself, you have control. When you give up that process to the cloud, is the cloud really your friend?

| I Want to be First on Google | There is a scam going on, and anybody who thinks there is much to the Search Engine Optimizaton sales pitch (mostly from India), you're going to be surprised at how much it really costs.
First of all, let's look at the reality. Google (Yahoo, etc..) makes their money on advertising, and they are doing very well. Who are the advertisers? Everyone who is willing to spring for the Google Ad Words, and believe me, there is no shortage of those folks.
If you are interested, you can buy a slot for a keyword phrase and pay for clicks, views etc, even set your budget.
Just remember, the more competitive your keyword phrase is, the more expensive the cost. That's Life!
When someone tells you they can put you first on the search engines, grab your wallet.
Anybody selling you the myth of being first when someone types in (whatever), they are counting on your ignorance when it comes to search engine results.
First, Google will rotate (free) results so everyone supposedly gets a shot at the top slots. but when there are millions of results for a search term, you may be waiting a long time.
One thing that happens, is you may pay $500+ per month (if you're lucky) to get listed first and all they will do for you is pay for a Google Ad Word and you're on your own (except for the re-occurring $500+ per month you sign up for).
Chances are they will spend $100 on your Ad Words and Pocket the remaining $400.
Another trick is to make your keyword phrase so long, you're guaranteed to show up first, and that nobody will type that in.
Lets say you sell Ham Sandwiches. You may end up with the search phrase "Ham Sandwiches Sold By the Pound For $5.00"
If you're looking for Ham Sandwiches are you going to type in that specific phrase? I'll bet that phrase comes up pretty close to the top. See what I mean? Paying $500+ per month for that is very expensive.

| Is Your Identity Safe? | For those who cherish their identity, keep in mind, most modern printers, copiers, fax machines have an internal hard drive that keeps a copy of everything it processes. Chances are these devices never get erased even when they are recycled for new machines.
Most organizations lease these items and recycle them at the end of the lease period, where they are sold to anybody that will come up with the cost.
Just think, major insurance companies, government agencies, doctor's offices, banks, and I could most certainly go on, but you get the picture.
