The Site Review - How It Helps
| What Is A Site Review? | | Beginning a website marketing plan without a proper site review is similar to starting on a trip without knowing exactly where you final destination is. Heading toward Florida when your actual destination is in Michigan will turn out to cost you in both time and money. Having the appropriate map showing you the way to your real destination is the same as having a proper site review! The site review is a road-map to properly configure your website to be optimized for the search engines and a key component of your website marketing plan. |
|
| What Does A Site Review Tell Me? | Every website needs to have specific components other than the page content. Some of these components are internal and some are external.
Internal components are inherent to the website itself and include such things as a proper Title tag, Description tag, emphasis labels such as the H1, H2, proper link and page naming, what keywords are extracted from the existing page (this surprises many), more information can be found by reading Organic Marketing Strategy, web page structure deficiencies if they exist, broken links, proper redirection of bad or not found pages to new renamed pages, the existence of a robots file and sitemap.
External components come in many flavors, such as how do you currently rank in the Search Engine Result Pages (SERPs), is your site banned, does it have any penalties from Google, are you linked to sites in bad neighborhoods, is your site filled with backlinks from known link farms (paid links), what is your page rank.
It's not uncommon for websites to have more than one domain name pointing back to the primary site. If this is not done properly with corresponding 301 redirects you could be tagged with having duplicate content and (especially with google) your ranking could drop dramatically.
A worse case scenario would be if one of the domains you have has been banned from google, it may also affect the ranking of your primary site as google uses the whois database to link domain owners. In most cases people buy up domains to keep the competition from getting them. In this case it is almost always better to park the domain instead of pointing the domain to your primary site.
Removing as many questionable components out of the equation helps the website owner eliminate the possible causes of poor page ranking in the SERPs. This is where the value of a proper Site Review comes in.
Getting a clear picture of your website status provides a clear picture as to what is needed to move forward with your Website Optimization & Marketing Plan.
|
| Expect Recommendations | A proper site report will identify the issues you may be facing with internal and external components which may affect your website ranking, and will also offer resolutions as to what is needed to be done to correct the existing problems.
Some of the recommendations may require you have access to certain web server files, but many are able to be corrected by files you have under your control.
Files such as .htaccess, robots.txt, sitemaps and of course the page components such as your page tags, images and content should be easy to correct (once you know the problems exist).
Once corrected, you should notice (over time) an improvement to your page ranking.
